BV Financial's Net Interest Margin Improves

BV Financial's net interest margin expanded to 4.46% from 4.40% in the prior-year quarter, reflecting an improvement in its interest spread despite lower net interest income.

The decline in net interest income was primarily attributable to lower average outstanding loan balances. Average loans decreased to $717.5 million from $743.1 million a year earlier.

Total interest income declined 4.5% to $12 million, while interest expenses decreased 9.2% to $2.9 million. The reduction in borrowing expenses partly offset weaker interest income.

The company's quarterly interest rate spread improved to 3.74% from 3.65%, supported by a lower overall cost of interest-bearing liabilities.

BVFL's Operating Expenses Decline

Noninterest expenses decreased approximately 14% year over year to $5.1 million from $5.9 million.

Compensation and employee benefits expenses fell $0.7 million, primarily reflecting reduced staffing levels and lower expenses associated with the company's 2024 Equity Incentive Plan.

Other expenses also declined approximately $0.1 million, largely due to reduced fraud-related losses.

These improvements helped lower the efficiency ratio to 51.81% from 58.58% a year earlier, indicating improved operating cost efficiency.

The company recorded a $0.2 million provision for credit losses, compared with a $1 million provision reversal in the prior-year quarter. This unfavorable swing weighed on reported profitability despite lower operating expenses.

BV Financial's Loan Portfolio Contracts

BV Financial's total assets declined 3.8% to $877.9 million as of Sept. 30, 2026, from $912.2 million at Dec. 31, 2025.

Net loans decreased 3% to $726.3 million, with the largest reductions occurring in commercial, construction and land, and non-owner-occupied residential lending.

Total deposits declined marginally by 0.3% to $674 million. Noninterest-bearing deposits increased 0.8% to $139.5 million, while interest-bearing deposits decreased 0.6% to $534.5 million.

Management utilized cash generated from the declining loan portfolio to repay $30 million in Federal Home Loan Bank borrowings, reducing outstanding borrowings to $5 million.

BVFL's Asset Quality and Capital Position

Nonperforming assets increased to $3.2 million from $2.3 million at year-end 2025, reflecting higher nonaccrual loans.

The allowance for credit losses totaled $6.3 million, representing 0.86% of total loans compared with 0.85% at Dec. 31, 2025.

Return on average assets declined to 1.57% from 1.65%, while return on average equity decreased to 7.50% from 7.77% a year earlier.

Stockholders' equity increased marginally to $184.2 million from $183.8 million at year-end 2025.
